Some had Leyland engines and boxes, the early ones I think.
Leyland gearboxes were great.

Some had Leyland engines and boxes, the early ones I think.
Leyland gearboxes were great.
Upto about 85hp or so i think, when they introduced the 2100 i think they found all the weak parts.

The Trantor Mk1 was fitted with a Perkins 4.236 or 4.248 (can't remember but think the 248 as I seem to remember the same hp as the MF 590 at the time. The Mk 2 had the Leyland 4.98 Turbo engine. Had quite a lot to do with the MK1 on my pre college farm. The farm fitter and I took a 6.354 out of an old MF 500 combine and it was taken to Trantor to trial in a MK1. Never heard any more about it. AFAIK the drive components were not tractor based at all. More like L/R front brakes, 5sp light truck gear box, even lighter transfer box and a 7.5ton truck drive axle.
The Mk 1 on this farm would do about 55mph on oversize tyres. No one liked it as it was not particularly comfortable with poor ventilation. It came into its own as a run around bowser tug or similar. It was expected to pull a trailer with 10ton of wheat (with a crappy old single axle lorry conversion with p1ss poor brakes and rolling on corners). Every part of the transmission failed at some point, mostly with me the student. It still kept breaking when I was not there much to my pleasure. The occasion I really remember was unloading on the go (and you could not see anything as it was so low) dipping the clutch and releasing again on a bit of soft ground half loaded. Bang and no drive. The Prop shaft had twisted like candy and snapped. Ffukin student.

There were a couple near us (both Perkins) and they did an alright job of hauling bales etc.
Good idea just not enough funding.

Yes, I remember them having Land Rover parts. :lol:

Wind powered? No no no. I don't do sailing. At least not unless it's fifteen decks high and 300m long weighing about 150,000 tonnes.
