What happens to these chemicals once they are in the soil? Some get taken up by plants but what if (say) no crops are grown after application? I imagine that over a number of years they'd leach out but would any sit there until a plant used them?

Which stay in the soil longer? 'Refined' chemicals or something like manure?

Soil chemistry isn't simple but most would get bound up onto a soil particle. Anions and cations, that sort of thing.

Depending on its origin soil naturally contains minerals plants use for nutrition, some loosely attached and some more or less permanent bonded.

Nitrogen is one of the problematic nutrients that isn't bonded to the soil.

Mined nutrients or manure based nutrients in the long term are much the same. The rate of release is slower for the manure.

Out of interest we are one of the few to have a decent crop of maize ,,,,,,, I think mainly because we put DAP down the spout whearas the typical crop of maize grown on a dairy farm has about 65 tons per acre of shit ploughed under , in theory more than enough for the crops requirement ,,,,,,but not till the roots find it

Ours has DAP, we used it for the first time last year when we deliberately missed a bout and was there a difference !
We also put 92 units urea on & work it into the ground pre-drilling
