Well, having just re-read some of the comments on the 'Autumn' thread, this spring, if you can call it that, certainly seems to be the opposite. Granted, we did have one week around here when the dust (a little) flew and much activity was carried out. Still some sugar beet being grown, but I don't think as much as of old.

Much of the ground not set last autumn (which was not a huge amount) has gone, I reckon, into spring barley.

On my trip to Hastings last Wednesday (in the rain!!!!) I did manage to notice that many fields were waterlogged. It's the same around here after the recent rains. Some fert was applied, but hellif some of the crops need it! Yellow, sickly looking after the winter. Some rape looks dreadful, but I reckon it will recover if it can receive some fert and spray soon.

As I said in the Autumn thread, a lot can go wrong between then (when the crops looked very good indeed) and harvest. They now have some catching up to do. A spell of warmer weather would help.

If I was still farming, I would be more worried about a dry April and May than anything else. None of the crops have had to put roots down to obtain water, and it will not be long before it is too late for them to do so. I hope we continue to get 'April showers', as it will be a poor old harvest if we do get a prolonged drought.

Full English Brexit, please!
