In fairness OLD, I think the botulism outbreak could have affected a farm of any size. Dead chickens in poultry litter presumably picked up by the forager an distributed in the silage. It may be the litter hadn't even been spread on the silage ground, but foxes or other vermin had carried the chicken remains there from nearby.

I've got a neighbour with a large free range unit and a planning application in to double the size, so have been very tempted to try some poultry manure, especially as there are minimal cattle here these days so I don't have the quantity of FYM any more. Think I'll give it a miss unless ploughing in.
