I must say this calving is being a bit trying. We replaced the bull last may so these are his first calves for us. They are strong, healthy and easy calving but some are taking a but of help to suckle. However, we have one that just won't suck :x . Every time we feed her, having milked the cow, we try with a bottle with this teat, that teat but you put a milky finger in her mouth and she just pushes away and shakes her head. So we end up tubing her each time. Driving me mad she is. Lovely healthy thing too and the mum has mountains of milk.
Next plan I think, although well let her get a couple of days bigger/stronger, will be salt water :P

Anyone got any magic tricks? :)

At least the mum is calm too. Half the others only want to kill you for the few days apr├Ęs :!:

If the calf is looking healthy it may be that it is sucking, just not when your around, been known to keep a cow and calf in for a week before you actually see the damn thing sucking.

Never heard about salt water. What's the theory behind giving her that?

We got a free sample of Nettex Kick-start a month ago - molasses based with added bits - two calves have had it so far - not because they weren't sucking though - but they liked the taste ..?

Read somewhere about giving them a vit E & selenium injection.
Just read that the Kick-Start contains these. http://s8.postimg.org/bfd35x005/img006.jpg

I had an old nipple (yeah, yeah) I would put on a bottle that the milk just ran out of. I cut the opening so it would. The calf had to swallow or drown.

Seems once they swallowed they would very softly suck, then switch them over.

Do I get points for taking this seriously ?

Yes I know what you mean but I am sure not. The teats (I spend half my time looking at teats  ) look quite different after sucking or licking and these never do. She fills will milk by the time we get back to her. They are in an area where we are sorting out the rest, so can see her a lot of of the time.
When I say healthy, actually it maybe isn't quite strong enough to put much effort in, think we need to step up what we give it, just always a bit cautious with the tubing

Make her thirsty :drunken:

We gave her an injection of selenium a couple of evenings ago. Thought I would go out in the morning and see her sucking but no change. I would like to try some vitesal but can't find it here. Is that similar to kick-start

Yes tried that one. Did nearly drown a calf last back end like that :?

Then maybe I think Mr Darwin had the answer.

And seriously, if it's a heifer, don't keep it back.

I would agree with this 99 times out of a 100.
